Seeking cash donations along with tangible items
While most school-aged children stock up on all the pencils, notebooks and glue sticks they need for the entire academic year during back-to-school sales in August, the two Catholic Charities shelters need school supplies throughout the year to serve children moving into shelter.
But storing a year’s worth of supplies at the two shelters gets tricky. Traci Kennedy, executive director, says that is why Catholic Charities is seeking cash donations, along with tangible items, during its current Back to School Drive.
School supplies needed year round for new families coming to shelter
“Cash donations received at the beginning of the school year give our shelter staff the resources they need to purchase supplies and clothing in the right sizes as children enter shelter throughout the school year,” Traci says.
Traci explains that new families continually move into both St. Anthony Family Shelter and Harbor House Domestic Violence Shelter as the average stay is between 30-45 days; the two shelters combine to host as many as 25 families at one time. Making sure that the children who come into shelter have the structure of a school routine, and have what they need to succeed, is among the first tasks that Catholic Charities case managers work on with parents.
“A school routine is so important for the emotional well-being of children in shelter,” Traci says. “Our staff makes sure each child has the appropriate clothes, shoes and all the supplies that he or she needs to be successful in a learning environment.”
