For many school-aged children, a fun way to prepare for the school year is to go shopping for new supplies like notebooks, pencils, crayons and clothes.
For the children served by the two shelters at Catholic Charities or for the children who interact with a classroom Foster Grandparent from Catholic Charities, the need for supplies happens all year long.
“When children come into Harbor House Domestic Violence Shelter or St. Anthony Family Shelter, they often don’t have the supplies or clothes that they need for school,” said Kenna Bell, annual fund manager for Catholic Charities. “Having previously worked in one of our shelters, I know that one of the first steps our case managers take to help children new to the shelter have a normal routine is to make sure they are going to school.”
School supplies needed througout the year
Bell said that this means the two shelters are in need of school supplies and clothes not only as schools reopen in August, but throughout the year. In addition, the classroom Foster Grandparents that Catholic Charities places in a number of schools, daycares and shelters throughout Sedgwick County use similar supplies during the school year as they mentor and tutor students.
That is why Bell has organized a school supply drive for Catholic Charities this summer. Those who would like to participate are encouraged to make a cash donation which will provide funds throughout the year without taking up valuable storage space at the shelters. Cash donations also provide the funds needed to purchase school clothes in the right size and color for kindergartners through high schoolers.
For those who prefer to provide tangible items, Bell said wish lists for the shelters and Foster Grandparents are available on Amazon Smile and Amazon, as well as the Catholic Charities website.
