September is Suicide Prevention Month and September 10 has been tabbed World Suicide Prevention Day, both with the purpose to raise awareness and encourage people to start the conversation on suicide and suicide prevention.  

One death by suicide occurs every 11 minutes according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The struggle against suicide is very real and an exhausting battle for many people to talk about. Information is power. Knowing a little about the mental health struggle and how to help can make a difference in lives.

What to look for

  • Depression or another mental illness
  • Sense of hopelessness
  • Isolation
  • Self-harming behaviors
  • Personality changes or mood swings
  • Impulsive or reckless behavior
  • Giving away possessions
  • Saying goodbye to friends and family

What to do when you notice these signs

  • Remain patient and calm
  • Call 988
  • Help connect with appropriate mental health professionals
  • Remove means such as guns, knives or stockpiled pills
  • Listen non-judgementally to the person and validate the person’s struggle
  • Express concern
