Catholic Charities recently honored five people for the contributions of time and treasure that they make to support the organization’s mission. Jane Schwartz, Blessed Sacrament, Andrew and Jamie Mies, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Roger McCoy and Kathy Gann-McCoy, St. Thomas Aquinas, were honored April 2 as part of a new recognition program unveiled during the inaugural Night of Joy gratitude gala.
“Catholic Charities is blessed by so many generous people who share their time, talent or treasure in support of our mission,” said Wendy Glick, executive director. “We are grateful for all those who support our work. In deciding to recognize a few people with special recognitions, our hope is that their stories will inspire current and future donors and volunteers alike.”
Schwartz was presented the Spirit of Joy Volunteer Award, presented to an outstanding volunteer who embodies what it means to be the hands and feet of Jesus for the people that Catholic Charities serves. The retired special needs teacher began volunteering for Catholic Charities in 2008, and now spends hundreds of hours a year at both Our Daily Bread Food Pantry and Harbor House Domestic Violence Shelter.
“We are called to give of our time, talent and treasure,” Schwartz said. “When I add on the joy and gratitude I feel when I volunteer, my stewardship becomes a home run! I’m allowed to be the face of Christ to so many, and in return I see Him in them — hence, the joy and gratitude.”
Andrew and Jamie Mies were honored as the Faithful Servant Outstanding Philanthropists, presented to donors who faithfully support the mission of Catholic Charities through their consistent giving. Andrew, investment officer at 6 Meridian and Jamie, full-time mom to the couple’s two sons, have donated to Catholic Charities since 2011. In 2014, they became consistent, monthly donors, which is how they continue to give today.
“We have been greatly blessed and feel called to share,” the couple said. “We are drawn to groups that are making a significant impact to immediately improve people’s lives – we trust the leadership of Catholic Charities to be good stewards and direct funds to where they can have the greatest impact.”
McCoy, founder of McCoy Petroleum Company, and Gann-McCoy, a homemaker, were named as the Caritas Outstanding Philanthropists, presented to donors who exemplify charity and Christian love of humankind demonstrated by giving to Catholic Charities for 20 or more years. The couple have given to Catholic Charities since 1995, and, in 2014, they turned their annual gift into a monthly contribution.
“God has provided us with many blessings and we believe it is our Christian duty to share a portion of these blessings with those in need,” the couple said. “We feel that contributing to Catholic Charities provides an easy and efficient way for us to provide help to those in need.”
