The number of people seeking food assistance was up dramatically at the Catholic Charities Help Center in Wichita. More than 3,800 people were served in July, about 50 percent more than July of 2008. Because the donations for the program received from schools won’t begin for several weeks, the needs for August are expected to be higher than ever. “August and November are typically the peak months,” said Tonya Knipp, director of the food pantry. “With the high volume in July, we’re gearing up for August and the fall.” Partnering with local churches and businesses made a difference last year. Enough food items and support made it possible to meet the increased need. These efforts continue. However, overall there is a 21 percent increase in need this year. Spangles restaurants are participating is a program to help the pantry. Those taking at least two canned food items to any Spangles Restaurant during the month of August will receive a coupon for a free ice cream cone. Volunteers from “We Can” of Asbury Methodist Church, Catholic Charities Help Center, and United Methodist Open Door are working with Spangles to meet community needs. The Help Center also needs plastic bags to put food in for families. Plans for reusable bags are being considered, if you have an interest helping with a green effort to provide reusable bags for families, please contact Catholic Charities at 264-8344, ext. 221. Food and plastic bags can be delivered to 437 N. Topeka, Monday through Friday from 8 – 10 a.m. or 1 to 5 p.m. For a list of needed food items, please visit http://www.providinghope.org.
