About Home Studies

The State of Kansas requires a home study evaluation to be conducted to assess the family’s ability to rear a child. An evaluation must be written on the prospective adoptive couple, their home, financial background, family history, references, health history, legal background checks, and other information necessary to determine the couple’s suitability for adopting. All home study evaluations are valid for one year; after which time, a home study update must be completed. The Home Study evaluation is conducted by a licensed adoption professional and requires four to five interviews; a minimum of one home visit is required. Catholic Charities Adoption Services is aware that home study questions are personal and can feel invasive, repetitive, and arbitrary. Therefore, we strive to develop an open attitude of trust and respect while emphasizing the importance of the questions being asked. We recognize how vulnerable one may feel during this process and recommend that you present yourself honestly. The couple is given the opportunity to review the home study.

The agency completes a written report, including our recommendation on the suitability of the couple for adoption. The home study evaluation is a court report; the agency will forward one original to an attorney or to another adoption agency of choice. If other copies are needed for attorneys and/or adoption agencies, a $10 processing fee may be charged. All home study fees are nonrefundable.
