How Susceptible Are You to Becoming Homeless?

Adapted from the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, the following survey illustrates some of the factors that can lead to homelessness. How close to homelessness are you?

1. Is it possible for you to become involved in a flood, fire, tornado or natural disaster?
2. Is your job in a market that could become obsolete?
3. Are you likely to suffer long-term illness or accident without proper health benefits or other compensation?
4. Is it likely that a change or downturn in the economy could cause you or a family member to lose a job?
5. Do you live in a household with only one full-time job/income?
6. Are you behind in any monthly bills or have you received a late notice?
7. Are housing costs in your area increasing faster than wages?
8. Does anyone in your family struggle with alcohol/drug or other addictions?
9. Has there been any form of domestic violence or abuse in your family?
10. Do you have a family or network of friends who are struggling with their own emotional and/or financial issues?

Answering yes to one or a few of these does not indicate that you will become homeless. However, the more of these that are answered yes when there is not strong family support, the more likely one can become homeless.
