A new location for the Catholic Charities Food Pantry, at 2825 S. Hillside, will open for service today, February 1.

The pantry moved to the new location on South Hillside from a location behind the St. Anthony Family Shelter. Hours of operation for the pantry will now be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. – noon and the second and fourth Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. – noon.

The pantry is co-locating with The Lord’s Diner and Guadalupe Clinic, ministries of the Catholic Diocese of Wichita. Executive Director, Cynthia Colbert, said that in time Catholic Charities will consider how to bring other services offered by the agency to the outreach area.

“With our mission of alleviating poverty and building strong families in the Diocese of Wichita these types of collaborations will allow for the development of a more holistic approach to serving families and children with basic needs,” Colbert said.

In its new location Catholic Charities Food Pantry will offer a Client-Choice model of service, allowing households to choose nutritious food menu items based on individual family-size, tastes and preferences.

The pantry is also in need of food donations, as well as volunteers. For more information, please call (316) 264-8344, extension 4101.

Together We Serve to Alleviate Poverty

For a little while longer, it is the beginning of a new year. We look ahead and make plans, set goals, and can begin anew as we leave the past year behind us. This time of year is also designated for Poverty Awareness. This is the time when we can reflect on the teachings of our Church regarding service to the least among us. The Bishops, in their pastoral letter, A Place at the Table, remind us that as Catholics we must come together with a common conviction that we can no longer tolerate the moral scandal of poverty in our land and so much hunger and deprivation in our world (A Place at the Table, pg. 1). Jesus shows us that we are to act with love and compassion, as in Matthew 25:40 Jesus identifies himself with the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the imprisoned, and the stranger, insisting that when we serve them we serve him (Mt 25:40).

As a Church family we do reach out to make a difference. Here are just a few outreach ministries that extend Christ’s healing ministry to the poor and vulnerable in our Diocese:

Of course there are other ways we serve the poor and vulnerable in our Diocese, as in parishes and individuals we reach out daily to fellow parishioners and local community members, responding to needs in informal and formal ways. We pray, volunteer and donate our time, talents and resources.

Now that the Together Vision has concluded the fundraising part of the campaign, we are still encouraged to implement the three pillars of the campaign – Together we gather, we learn, we serve. With the challenges of today’s economy, with the uncertainty of public funding for programs, we, as Catholics must remember that together, we are one human family, that we must see each other as “neighbor” and, as the Bishops teach us, that in solidarity we are called to care for our neighbors in need and to see all those who suffer as our brothers and sisters.

For more information on getting help or getting involved, visit the website or call one of the agencies or ministries listed above.

WICHITA, Kan. – B-98 FM’s Brett Harris will ride from stop to stop Tuesday, Nov. 29–
Saturday, Dec. 3, to gather items donated by the community for women and children served at
Catholic Charities Harbor House and the YWCA Women’s Crisis Center. Harris has dedicated 19
years to helping women and children fleeing abuse in the Wichita area. It is a cause near to his
heart and Stuff the Bus is the result. Harris joins co-sponsors and numerous local businesses
each year to collect supplies and items for local domestic violence shelters, resulting in
approximately half of the total items needed for the year at each Wichita shelter. Stuff the
Bus also runs in Hutchinson helping the shelter there.
|
Join Harris as he travels the city on a bus with a mission. Stuff the Bus has become a symbol of
generosity within our community as the bus is stuffed with items to help women in crisis.
Throughout the year, many of the women in the shelter learn to ride buses to get to where
they need to go, but at Christmas, a Wichita Transit bus travels the city on their behalf
collecting items to help them. This year’s sponsors are B-98 FM and Wichita Transit.

Who can help “STUFF” the bus?
During this five day event, Harris will be stopping at local businesses, schools and churches.
Anyone who has gathered at the stops to “stuff” the bus with Christmas gifts and basic
necessities for the domestic violence shelters women and children are welcome to participate.
Anyone can help by donating items at participating stops.

Where and when will Stuff the Bus stop?
To see Harris and his crew, check out the schedule of bus stops for the location
nearest you:http://www.catholiccharitieswichita.org/index.php/events/stuff-the-bus/.
Some of the stops to take note of include: Wichita Festivals, Kennedy and Coe,
LLC, Museum of World Treasures and Dustee’s Fashion Accessories. Some of the Wichita
schools participating are Blessed Sacrament Catholic School, Holy Spirit Catholic School in
Goddard, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School, Cleveland Traditional Magnet School,
Wichita State University, Christ the King Catholic School, Church of the Magdalen Catholic
School and Friends University.

What is being collected for Stuff the Bus?
See the list of items for women, children and teens staying in the shelters:http://www.catholiccharitieswichita.org/index.php/events/stuff-the-bus/.

Who benefits?
Women and children fleeing domestic violence through Catholic Charities Harbor House and
the YWCA’s Women’s Crisis Center. The shelters provide a safe haven for hundreds each year
and serve thousands through extensive outreach services.

A Call to Action – No More Domestic and Sexual Violence

This time of year, many of us will be gathered with friends and family to celebrate the holiday. We will enjoy food, fellowship and relaxation together as we think about the things for which we are thankful.

Yet, for many, this is not so. And for the family of Antonia Woods-Cratic, murdered by her husband in Wichita on November 12th, this holiday will never be the same. Antonia was Wichita’s 25th homicide victim of the year. What news stories didn’t capture is that she is the 10th victim of domestic violence killed by her partner this year. Domestic violence deaths in 2011 are 40% of all homicides. Antonia’s death makes it almost one a month. And we, agencies dedicated to helping victims of domestic and sexual violence, stand together to say, “enough is enough.”

Violence is increasing in our community. Victims have faced escalated and more violent physical assaults. Wichita police responded to an increased number of domestic violence calls during the first 10 months of 2011. Sexual violence advocates have assisted 298 people at the hospital reporting sexual assault to date in 2011. This is a 2% increase from last year. The numbers reflected here are only the numbers of people reporting. We know that many acts of domestic and sexual violence go unreported.

As the executive directors of Catholic Charities Harbor House, YWCA Women’s Crisis Center, StepStone, and the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center, we are calling on the community to join us in a “No More” Campaign aimed at preventing domestic and sexual violence and increasing intervention support for victims.

What is needed to help stop the escalation of violence?

1. Hold public meetings on the issue
Talk about the issue openly to raise awareness that domestic and sexual violence affects every member of our community and work to identify solutions. The situation in our community demands better efforts to protect abuse victims and stop perpetrators before it’s too late.

2. Understand warning signs and learn what support services are available in your area. Call 211 or visit the websites listed below to find out what specialized support services are available. Attend a workshop or a training provided by our local domestic and sexual violence experts to learn more about how you can become a support person for a friend, family member, or coworker who has been a victim.

3. Increase funding for prevention and intervention services. Research indicates that when increased funding is provided to domestic and sexual violence services the general community is safer. Voice your support to local, state and federal officials for funding these essential services for women and other victims.

4. Stronger support for law enforcement and prosecution. More victim centered criminal justice systems encourage participation from victims and sends a vital message to offenders that the community will stand for this violence “No More”.

Join us in our “No More” Campaign. In the coming months we will be hosting community forums and working together to bring more awareness to this important community issues.

Women’s lives and our community are at risk. It is time that we say “No More!”.

Stacy Mann, Executive Director, YWCA, www.ywcaofwichita.org
